CICLAVIA takes over LA

CICLAVIA went down again in Los Angeles, bringing HUGE amounts of bikes into Downtown LA.

Ciclavia

This event has happened a few times now and seems to be getting bigger every time. Over 100,000 bikes were there and it showed. We were stuck at a light in DTLA as it changed 3 times, for a minute it seemed like there were too many bikes out there. Is there such a thing as a bicycle traffic jam?

Even with all the commotion, noobs swerving in and out, and people stopping in the middle of the road for no apparent reason, we didn’t see any accidents and LAPD reported ZERO arrests. Yea for us!

An event like this makes you wonder what it would really be like without cars. As cyclists we are able to circumvent certain obstacles (like red lights) that cars face. But if everyone is on bikes, we would have to abide by traffic rules or run into a peloton of riders crossing in front of us. Would there be a bike FAST lane and a SLOW lane? It definitely would be easier to talk to girls at red lights.

TRAFIK had a great day of riding, hanging with the homies and handing out prizes when we spotted riders rocking TRAFIK decals and shirts. Next one is in October, see you there!

Check out all the pics from the day on the TRAFIK FLICKR

Ciclavia is here! One of the best days for cyclists in Los Angeles, 10 miles of streets are closed off to traffic and thousands of bikes, boards, and blades take over the roads.

This year the TRAFIK street team will be out in force, if you WEAR any TRAFIK gear, FIND one of our riders in the street, you can WIN a prize pack from us and our sponsors. Catch the Street Team this Sunday!

NYC – Graffiti Mecca

While visiting NYC this past week we decided to take an epic bike adventure around the entire city, trying to hit all boroughs (except Staten Island). The trip began in Times Square and took us north, around Central Park and across the Queensborough Bridge to arrive at 5 Pointz – the dopest graff yard we’ve ever seen.

5 Pointz is an old factory now completely covered in aerosol art. Tons of music videos and films are shot there, and they had just wrapped a Morgan Freeman featured when we arrived. Our NYC tour guide Rabbi D introduced us to the OG’s working the yard. Stoked to be able to hang with NYC graf celebs MERES, ZROCK and SPUD. The spot is amazing, just about every inch covered in graf art. Wish we could have seen them hanging from ropes spraying the walls up top.

We were losing light quick, so we smashed down from Queens, through Brooklyn, all the way to Coney Island, then up the Belt Parkway back to our starting point. Epic 35 mile Ride. Our NYC friends were definitely feelin’ it, which I think was the major difference between riding in NYC and LA. In LA, we put in miles. Lots of miles. I also think that LA riders tend to have more “flossy” bikes. Everyone in NYC has a bike theft story, and even the most shitty Magna’s are U-locked and Kryptonite chained like a mo-fo. It make sense that you don’t see many Fuji Track Pro’s or Cinelli’s as daily commuters like you do in LA. Those bikes would probably last 30 seconds on the NYC streets.

But overall, bikes are more prevalent in NYC. Everyone has one and drivers are more aware of them on the roads. But it’s still hectic as fuck and come winter, we’ll still be riding. Big Thanks to all the NYC peeps that we met along the way, the graf homies, and all the cops who looked the other way as we rolled through every red light possible.

TRAFIK spent a dope week living and riding in NYC. As a LA rider, it was good to compare the cities first-hand from the saddle. But first we had to get a loner bike. Luckily a friendly neighbor had a broken down Nishiki that he loaned us. To the Neighborhood Bike Shop!

One size too small, 2 flats, with a wobbly front wheel & spin-out 42/18 gearing, the Nishiki needed some TLC. Big Thanks to Richie at Zukkies bike shop in Brooklyn for making it rideable. Friendly local shops are common around NYC, maybe one of the reasons most people don’t ride with tools/tubes. Repairs are quick and easy.

Just down the street in BK we rolled into AFFINITY Cycles, a gathering place for the fixed riders in the borough. Victor was a cool guy who showed us around the shop, highlights included the actual bike they built for the upcoming film “Premium Rush“.

I guess J. Gordon Levitt couldn’t ride fixed (big surprise) so this baby was outfitted with coaster brakes. Also, if you rub off some of the fake grime, it’s a shiny new frame underneath. Nice job art dept!

From Affinity we went on a Brooklyn tour, had to hit up the 420 man to make that comparison too! (LA wins). Fought traffic all the way to Prospect Park – NYC riders definitely have some traffic skills. I don’t know how many times cars would swerve into the bike lane. Also, NYC riders don’t give a fuck about red lights. Props to that. Over a blunt and a beautiful view, it was decided that an epic ride around the entirety of NYC was called for. More to come…

For fixed-gear cyclists, Los Angeles is a city that has it all. From the neon glow of Hollywood to the sun-drenched boardwalk of Venice Beach, fixed-gear has evolved into a vibrant street culture that is uniquely L.A. But for Unicyclists… sh*t just got real.

From director Spike Jonze, comes a new documentary feature that explores a side of L.A. few outsiders have seen. From races through rush-hour traffic to midnight loft parties, To Live & Unicycle in L.A. is a fast-paced trip through the busy streets and back-alleys of one of the world’s largest cities… on one wheel.

Oh btw, April Fools!

If you don’t know Rudy Melo, from Leader Bike and The 5th Floor, you’re sleeping on sh*t. He’s one of the world’s most recognized fixed-gear riders. Flying down from London, UK, he came to LA to race in Wolfpack’s Marathon Crash Race. While in Los Angeles, Rudy chilled at TRAFIK HQ and rode around the city with Leader team and TRAFIK rider, Jesus Lizama. It was the perfect chance to show Rudy the streets of L.A. (Tried riding on the left side LOL), ride to some of our favorite spots, and talk about the ever-growing global fixed gear culture.

While talking to Rudy about the cycling culture in the U.K. and his site, The 5th floor, we realized that we were very similar minds – we share common goals and common ideas. We’re grateful to have met Rudy and it’s definitely the beginning of what’s going to be a long-lasting connection. Fixed gear is worldwide!
